What is hwdVideoShare?

Can hwdVideoShare be used on a shared hosting plan?

Yes, hwdVideoShare can be used on a shared host. However, your should ask the hosting company if their shared plan will support all the server requirements for hwdVideoShare. You should also check our server recommendations. We also have a listed of supported hosts.

What are FFMPEG and MENCODER and do I need them?

FFMPEG and MENCODER are server programs which are used to convert video files into different formats. If you want to accept video uploads in a variety of video formats you need this software on your server. You should check with your hosting company that you have all the server requirements before Subscribing to hwdMediaShare. There are a number of shared hosts which support this software on their standard plans. If you do not have this software on your server, you can not convert videos. Therefore, you will only be able to accept video uploads in the flv video format, other formats can not be accepted.

Not all shared hosting plans will support all requirements for hwdVideoShare so you need to ask before you buy your hosting services. However, there are still many companies that do offer shared hosting plans that fully support hwdVideoShare.

You only need FFMPEG and MENCODER if you want to accept video uploads. If you only plan on using hwdVideoShare with videos from Third Party wesbites such as YouTube and Vimeo, you do not require FFMPEG or MENCODER on your server.

Can I run hwdVideoShare in Embed Only mode?

If you only want to embed videos from other third party websites such as Youtube.com then you can configure hwdVideoShare to do this. You do not need FFMPEG, MENCODER or FLVTOOL2 to run hwdVideoShare like this. Go to your hwdVideoShare General Settings and under the Upload tab, disable the local upload feature.

Will using hwdVideoShare mean my shared hosting account is suspended?

Running hwdVideoShare alone should not exceed your allocated server resources. However, running the conversion software (FFMPEG & MENCODER) might. If you are using a shared host we recommend you contact your host and discuss usage with them directly. Explain that you want to run FFMPEG and MENCODER and outline your expected traffic.

If you are on a shared hosting plan that already supports FFMPEG and MENCODER, resource usage is likely to be less of a problem however, we still recommend you discuss your expected traffic and seek advise about the most suitable hosting package for your website.

If you are on a shared host that does not support FFMPEG and MENCODER but you intent to install these programs yourself, resource usage is probably going to be a problem. We recommend you contact your host and make it clear that you intend to install this software and ask for advice regarding how to proceed.

Will hwdVideoShare function better on a dedicated server?

Yes, we recommend you use a dedicated server if possible.
