Which video formats can I support on my website?

hwdVideoShare does not convert the video itself, it uses FFMPEG (or MENCODER) to convert them. Therefore, you can accept any formats which are supported by your installations of FFMPEG and MENCODER. Standard installations of these programs come with build in support for most major video formats such as MPEG, WMV, MOV and AVI. Support for additional video formats can be added, but extra codecs might need to be installed on your server.

Once your FFMPEG and MENCODER can support extra formats you can add these formats into the General Settings of hwdVideoShare so users can start uploading them.

Do videos always need to be converted?

Yes.

There is no exception to this. All videos must be converted to the Flash format before they will be displayed in your video gallery.

What is so great about Flash?

Flash is great for online video and is used by all the major global video sharing websites. Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, metacafe, Reuters.com, and many other news providers. The main benefits of this format are:

  • Ubiquitous and Consistent Across Platforms
  • Economical Delivery Options
  • Potential New Revenue Streams Delivering Video

There is a detailed discussion of the benefits in this article:

Why don't you natively support other formats (MPEG, WMV)?

Technically it is possible to not convert uploaded videos and display them in their native format in the web browser. This is a poor solution for all the reason discussed in the above section. It requires the user to have installed all the separate plugins for different video formats (Windows Media Player, Quick Time, Real Player and others) and significantly reduces performance of the website.

What formats are natively supported?

FLV, MP4, SWF.
